GLASGOW CLAN 2 FIFE FLYERS 1

Glasgow Clan showed great character and dug deep to take a 2-1 win over Fife Flyers in the first of a double header against their Gardiner Conference rivals

The opening period didn’t disappoint as both sides contested a full-blooded affair, as is the norm in these fixtures, but the first period yielded no goals.

Rasmus Bjerrum nearly took advantage when former Clan D-man Scott Aarssen’s pass was intercepted by Scott Tanski, but the Dane was denied by Fife goalie Shane Owen.

The home side thought they had opened the scoring when a Gerard Hanson effort was blocked, with Bjerrum smashing in the rebound.

Fife called for a video review, citing the goal has come off its moorings and their appeal paid off as the ‘goal’ was wiped out, restoring the blank scoreline.

Glasgow took the lead after 31 minutes when a Matt Stanisz effort from the blue line saw Owen parry, but Brendan Connolly swept in the rebound.

Flyers were back in level terms not long after when Brett Bulmer and Carlo Finucci found a way to Paul Crowder, who tapped in to equalise.

But Clan were back in front at the end of the middle session when Matt Beca got the crucial touch on another Stanisz piledriver to send it beyond Owen.

The visitors had their chances to try and take the game into the extra period, but couldn’t find a way through home goalie Joel Rumpel, who had another sterline performance.

In fact, he produced the save of the game near the end when the puck looped goalward as Flyers tried to force an equaliser.

But Rumpel threw out his left leg as it looked destined for the net and the Kirkcaldy side were denied, with Clan holding on to preserve their 100% Gardiner Conference record.

Both sides will meet again at Fife Ice Arena on Saturday in a rematch in the latest chapter of this rivalry.
