Glasgow Clan 8 Sheffield Steelers 5

Glasgow Clan restored their three-point lead at the top of the Elite League as they defeated nearest challengers Sheffield Steelers 8-5.

It was first versus second with the winner having the pleasure of being the leading team at the top of the Elite League table.

Clan got off to the best possible start when Matt Stanisz sent the puck on goal, where Jack Musil was quick to react and send the final touch beyond Tomas Duba, the Steelers goalie.

The home team quickly added a second as Matt Beca combined with Scott Pitt, with the latter sweeping in a close-range finish to make it 2-0.

Steelers reacted quickly and a passage of short passes ended with Robert Dowd converting from Nikolai Lemtyugov and Aaron Fox’s men were back to within one.

The home side reopened the two-goal gap as Pitt turned provider with a shot into the centre that bounced off Duba, which Chad Rau quickly was on hand to finish off on the powerplay.

Sheffield nabbed another before the break when Anthony DeLuca’s chance was stopped by Killeen, but the puck came loose and former Clan forward Brendan Connolly executed.

Fox’s side pulled level early in the second period when DeLuca’s play seemed to hit off Killeen and the puck slid agonisingly into the net.

It didn’t have any adverse effects as Glasgow found an extra gear and kicked on, with three goals in the space of just under three minutes to open a good lead.

Rasmus Bjerrum’s pass landed nicely on the stick of Travis Ehrhardt, who sent a wrist shot into the net and Clan were back in front.

Bjerrum added a fifth when he stabbed in from close range with Mikael Lidhammar scoring Clan’s sixth, who swept in a Beca pass.

Pitt picked up his second after taking on a pass from Beca and he bulleted home a delicious shot to make it 7-3 and put Steelers out of sight.

Or so they thought.

Sheffield hit back through Nikolai Lemtyugov and Lucas Sandström to close the gap to two and they had the momentum at that point to go for more in the final seven minutes.

An incident involving Linden Springer and Brendan Connolly near the end got the fans on their feet, but Bjerrum’s second – an empty net goal – secured Clan’s eighth win at home from their last nine.
