GUILDFORD FLAMES 2 GLASGOW CLAN 3

Glasgow Clan picked up a first-ever win at Guildford Flames to put them in pole position, securing a 3-2 success in the first leg of the PredictorBet play-off quarter-final.

The tie now turns to Sunday back in Glasgow, but it was a big win as Pete Russell looks to take the team to the finals weekend in Nottingham next week for the first time since 2014.

Clan got the perfect start when Scott Pitt fired home after 31 seconds to signal a statement of intent for the tie.

Gerard Hanson was close to adding a second shortly after as Glasgow went for the jugular and while the game was a generally close affair.

The visitors went close as Tyson Wilson struck Chris Carozzi’s bar, but a second goal bookended the opening frame as Rasmus Bjerrum sent in a furious drive that flew into the net.

The Great Dane was a bit closer to the net when he picked up his second of the game in the middle session and a three-goal lead had been opened up.

Chances from Calle Ackered and Jamie Crooks tested Joel Rumpel in the away net, but Guildford couldn’t find a way through.

John Dunbar went close but spurned the chance to pull Flames back into the game with the net gaping and the three-goal lead stood after two periods.

Despite the one-sided scoreline, it was never likely to stay that way and Flames got their chance on a four-minute powerplay, netting two goals in quick succession to make the tie a little closer.

A good passing move led to Guildford cutting the deficit as Ackered set up his captain, Jesse Craige and the seal was finally broken.

Ian Watters added a second a couple of minutes later to close the gap to two and it gave Guildford some momentum.

Clan stayed resolute and held on to take a massive away victory as the road to Nottingham started to loom into view. Whether Clan will be on it, we’ll have to wait and see until tomorrow.
