It’s seen by many as the game nobody cares about, but it can be argued Braehead Clan and Fife Flyers didn’t see it that way when they met in the third place game in Nottingham two years ago.

The consolation game at the finals is never one to be taken seriously, but when the two Scottish teams were reduced to battling out for the consolation prize, that wasn’t the case.

Both sides were edged out of their respective semi finals, leaving them to fight it out for third place in Nottingham and it was the Clan that took the bragging rights.

Mike Will played in goal for Braehead as the Flyers raced into a 4-0 lead through Euan Forsyth, Josh Scoon, Jamie Wilson and Scoon again.

Blair Daly replaced Kevin Regan in goal for the Flyers when Clan hit back get to within one as Tristan Harper, Kevin Bergin and Kenton Smith all found the net.

Clan scored another three in the third session with Joel Champagne, Matt Haywood and Champagne again on target.

Derek Roehl pulled one back for Flyers and Ned Lukacevic tied it up in the 53rd minute to take the game to overtime.

But it was Ed McGrane that settled things in an odd man rush that saw him scored the winner four minutes into the additional period and settle the game.

Clan may not have won the trophy, but they made sure their weekend ended with a win in Nottingham to end Ryan Finnerty’s first campaign as coach on a high.
